My recent interview with Miss Universe, Pia Wurtzbach

“I hope to travel the world and tell my story, like I have for some time now, of how hard work pays off and that dreams really can come true and that girls around the world can stand up and tell their story and become powerful women themselves”

This was Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, Miss Universe’s response to one of my interview questions last Monday.  While she collected her thoughts and answered the questions, I couldn’t help but think, getting side tracked of course, that the beauty of life is what you make of it, the opportunities you are given, and how to make the best of sticky situations.  As a past Miss Universe Canada finalist, and a young woman who grew up watching Miss Universe every year, I had always glamourized the event and the women who participated in it.

Pia however, was everything I thought a winner would be, she was beautiful, patient, very well spoken and totally down to earth, even quite funny, signing off the interview with some broken Spanish that made us both giggle and smile.

When asked about her relationship with Ariadna Gutierrez, Miss Colombia, she answered “I have not spoken to her since the incident two months ago but I hope she is doing well and I know she has great things in store for her future.  It was a very unfortunate event that happened to us both but I think she will do just fine!”

– Do you have any plans to visit Colombia or any part of South America really on your international tour?

Pia: If I am invited, of course I would love to go any Latin American country. I am told the continent as a whole is so beautiful, I would love to be able to go and see the many countries of South America.

– So how has your experience been so far in Toronto, how was your arrival?

Pia: I’ve had a great time in Toronto so far, the people have been so friendly and welcoming. I’ve also been told that mother nature has been kind to me as it has been seasonally warm today whereas a few days and weeks ago it was brilliantly cold, maybe I brought the sunshine with me!

-How has it felt, how has your reign been so far as Miss Universe, has it sunk in yet?

Pia: It has been an amazing journey, it has only been two months but already I have done so much and I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. I can’t believe and can’t wait for the months ahead and see where this incredible opportunity brings me.

And just like that our interview segment and allotted time was up, but in just those short five minutes I was convinced that Miss Universe, miss Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, will influence the lives of many young women with her story, her ability to make the best of any situation, and her continued efforts to reach her goals.

Pia in reality worked since the age of 11 as an actress, the breadwinner for her family and pursued her dream of being Miss Philippines, and ultimately Miss Universe.

Her attitude and perseverance will inspire many women to pursue their goals, their goals of becoming lawyers, policy makers, musicians, film makers, law enforcers, mothers, beauty pageant winners, or whatever their dreams may be!
