Korean Tapas At Han Ba Tang

A few weeks ago I told you guys about my amazing experience at MeNami and that Chef Kevin Shin also manages Han Ba Tang, a Korean tapas style restaurant. Well, I had the pleasure of dining there and thought I should share a little about it for those of you who enjoyed MeNami.

Han Ba Tang translates to “One Full Round”. It’s a small cozy spot with a wooden industrial feel, due to the mismatched hooks, exposed infused Soju glass containers, the chalk boards which offer the cocktail list and specials, as well as the charging ports all over the restaurant promoting diners to Instagram and take photos (I’m not complaining!)

From my experience dishes tend to be smaller when dining at tapas style restaurants, but that isn’t the case here. Portions are huge and prices are fair, so come with an appetite! If you like Korean food, this is definitely a must try because it gives traditional flavors a modern twist.

We started off with the Kalbi Beef Tacos and the large Kimchi fries with Bulgogi Beef on top. The Kalbi Beef tacos were good, but not great unfortunately. The Kimchi fries on the other hand were the best I’ve ever had! I literally could not stop eating them, although there was no way we could finish such a large serving (I’m drooling just thinking about them).

We also got the large Spicy Chicken, this dish was a little too spicy for me. For those of you who can’t handle spicy food like me, order the cauliflower cream sauce or cheese fondue on the side and dip your chicken in it.

I loved the rice cakes which were in this dish, something I have never come across before. They don’t taste or look like rice at all, they are cylinder shaped and are made with glutinous rice flour (also known as sweet rice or chapssal), by steaming.

It’s time to travel to North York and experience these unique fusion restaurants! Let me know what you think in the comments below if you have tried Han Ba Tang. What cuisine or neighborhood should I explore next?
